Geothermal Energy
Staff from MCL Consulting are very proud to have been involved in the Riddel Hall (part of Queen’s University Belfast) Geothermal project.
A geothermal heating and cooling system was installed at the new Queen’s Business School Student Hub. The system uses 38 boreholes, drilled to a depth of 125 metres, to extract heat from the sandstone subsurface for the building’s heating and cooling needs, making it a pioneer in geothermal technology in Northern Ireland.
The project is designed to significantly reduce carbon emissions and lower energy costs compared to traditional gas boilers.
The project's holistic design and sustainability features have been recognized by industry awards, such as the RSUA Award for Northern Ireland Building of the Year 2025.
MCL are delighted to have been involved in this process, and are keen to explore other opportunities in Northern
